Defending Madrid Open champion Andy Murray cruised past Tomas Berdych, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the semifinal round. The roof was closed inside the Caja Mágica, making for some interesting conditions that the world No. 2 handled well despite not playing on indoor clay very often. He faces Rafael Nadal next.

American qualifier Louisa Chirico’s dream run in Madrid ended abruptly at the hands of Dominika Cibulkova. The unseeded Slovak—but former Australian Open runner-up—topped the 19-year-old, 6-1, 6-1 to reach the final. Cibulkova began her week by upsetting top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska in the first round.

Grigor Dimitrov has had some time to reflect since smashing three racquets and receiving a game penalty in the Istanbul final last week. (He lost the match to Diego Schwartzman, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4), 6-0.) “A lot was going on,” Dimitrov said after falling in the first round of Madrid. “It's no fun when you break strings on such big points, and in such big moments. It gets to you. That shows, also, that we're all human. I let myself down, and mainly my family and my team. Of course all the audience. You know me. I don't usually do that kind of stuff. It sets a super bad example for the youth.”
