Moms have been a big story in women’s tennis over the last few years, with Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka both making Grand Slam finals and a slew of others making noise on the tour.

And now in Rome, another one steps into the spotlight.

Yaroslava Shvedova, a three-time major quarterfinalist and former No. 25, returned to the tour in 2020 after giving birth to twins in 2018, and on Tuesday got her first tour-level win since coming back, beating 2020 Roland Garros quarterfinalist Martina Trevisan in a first-round thriller, 0-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6).

It was her 155th career tour-level win, her 50th in three sets, and first as a mom.

It won’t get any easier for Shvedova moving forward, though. World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty awaits her in the second round, and though the Kazakh has eight career Top 10 wins, she’s never beaten anyone in the Top 4—her best win came against No. 5 Jelena Jankovic at the 2009 US Open.

The two will be playing each other for the first time.

Two of Shvedova’s three major quarterfinals came at Roland Garros, in 2010 (falling to Jankovic) and 2012 (falling to Petra Kvitova). She also reached the last eight at Wimbledon in 2016 (falling to Venus Williams). The Kazakh is also a two-time Grand Slam doubles champion, winning Wimbledon and the US Open in 2010 alongside American Vania King. She went as high as No. 3 in the world in doubles.
