Title town never gets old
Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara picked up their third title of the year by virtue of their 6-2, 7-5 victory over Hayley Carter and Luisa Stefani. The Japanese pair also beat Carter and Stefani in the Abu Dhabi final to launch their 2021 season.
Finding silver linings
Stefani and Carter dropped to 0-3 in 2021 finals, having also finished runner-up in Adelaide. Still, with their strong effort in the Sunshine State, both will move well inside the Top 30 come Monday.
Stepping up to the plate
After dropping their WTA final team debut at 2019 San Jose, Shibahara and Aoyama have now won six straight title matches. This marked their biggest trophy to date, having previously triumphed on the 500 stage four times.
Breaking new ground
In a battle of first-time ATP Masters 1000 finalists, it was Hubert Hurkacz who emerged victorious, 7-6 (4), 6-4, over Jannik Sinner. Hurkacz became the first Pole to win a 1000-level title on the ATP Tour and will rise to a career-best No. 16.
Continuing that climb
Despite the loss, Sinner will also make a sizable jump in the rankings, moving up to No. 23. The 19-year-old is 14-5 on the year, having won his second title at Melbourne 1.
