A winning habit
Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic improved to 4-1 in ATP finals this season, and 25-3 overall, by denying Dan Evans and Neal Skupski, 6-4, 6-4. Mektic and Pavic, one of 2021's new doubles teams, previously triumphed in Antalya, Melbourne and Rotterdam.
Going with the flow
Despite the loss, it was a memorable tournament for Evans and Skupski. The two were joining forces for the first time, having teamed up at the last second when Skupski's older brother Ken was sidelined after discovering a blood clot in his leg.
No sets left behind
Mektic and Pavic did not drop a set en route to the title, a success that will return Pavic to the top of the doubles rankings on Monday for the first time since July 2018. Of note, the formidable duo eliminated a pair of all-American tandems in their first two rounds, defeating Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey before taking down Taylor Fritz and John Isner.
No. 1 for a reason
From match point down in her opener to successfully defending the title. Ashleigh Barty made her trek to Miami worth it after tasting victory for the second time at the South Florida event following Bianca Andreescu's retirement late in their second set.
Get well soon Bibi
Andreescu's fighting spirit shone through all tournament long as she returned to a tour-level final for the first time since winning the 2019 US Open. She was forced to retire down, 3-6, 0-4, after injuring her right ankle during her second set with Barty.
