The men kicked off their Miami campaigns on Tuesday and several familiar names failed to advance into the second round. On the women’s front, a former champion was sent packing, while a former Grand Slam champion fended off inspired opposition.

Yen-hsun Lu

Ranked No. 1020, the 37-year-old from Chinese Taipei defeated Sam Querrey, 6-3, 6-4. Lu, who has yet to win consecutive main-draw matches in Miami, will face top-seeded Daniil Medvedev for a spot in the round of 32.

Danielle Collins

The American avenged her 2019 Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open defeat to Kristina Mladenovic. Collins has had a strong start to the season, and set up a second-round clash with Veronika Kudermetova after posting a 6-3, 6-3 win over Mladenovic.

Cameron Norrie

After being outplayed in the second set by Yoshihito Nishioka, the Brit rallied to punch his ticket to the second round with a 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 win. No. 9 seed Grigor Dimitrov awaits.

Alizé Cornet

In a battle between two 30-somethings, the Frenchwoman rallied from a set down to top 2006 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. Cornet will look to at least score her first back-to-back main-draw matches this season in her next match against No. 9 seed Petra Kvitova.

Jelena Ostapenko

After seeing a second set lead vanish, the 2017 Roland Garros champion fended off Wang Xiyu, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-1, reeling off five straight games in the final set. Ostapenko will meet No. 25 seed Alison Riske next.
