It was a day full of exciting action at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open and at the Rotterdam Open. Elina Svitolina set up a quarterfinal battle with her doubles partner Victoria Azarenka, while Daniil Medvedev was overcome by anger and took an early exit.

Daniil Medvedev

After claiming 20 consecutive matches, Medvedev has taken two straight losses. In his Rotterdam opener, the Russian fell to Dusan Lajovic, 7-6 (4), 6-4, which will narrow his chances of moving up to world No. 2 this week. Towards the tail end of the match, Medvedev was overcome by emotion and brutally smashed his racquet, obtaining a point penalty for doing so.

The Spaniard was just one game away from shutting down reigning Doha champion Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets. That wasn't in the cards as the Belarusian pushed things into a deciding set. In the end, Muguruza managed to come out on top, posting a 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3 scoreline to advance to the quarterfinals.

The No. 1 seed's dominant, 6-1, 6-2, showing at the 500-level event sets up a quarterfinal clash with her doubles partner Victoria Azarenka. The two fell yesterday in their opening doubles match against Laura Siegemund and Elena Vesnina in a deciding 10-point tiebreaker.
