On Monday night, Serena Williams thrilled fans with a (virtual) appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Though it's the first interview Serena has done in Adelaide quarantine, the conversation started on an unexpected note: nerd cred.

"I do have some nerd cred," Serena said. "I'm super into, and I heard you're into, TheLord of the Rings, The Hobbit. I'm really big into comics, like the Marvel thing and DC, I'm all into that world."

Colbert had her husband Alexis Ohanian on his show in 2018 and a key part of their discussion was over how he's a self-proclaimed nerd and somehow managed to marry a 23-time Grand Slam champion.

In case you're wondering, Serena's favorite J. R. R. Tolkien character is Samwise Gamgee.

Of course, Colbert and Serena also discussed other topics like mental strength, her daughter Olympia's tennis career, where her Grand Slams are kept, her upcoming Super Bowl ad, and her experience in Australia.

The 39-year-old is a few days from total freedom and exhibition match play in Adelaide.

"They're doing it right," Serena said. "It's definitely hard with a three-year-old to be in the hotel all day, but it's worth it because you want everyone to be safe at the end of the day."

Serena's first match out of quarantine will be against Naomi Osaka on Friday.
