Setting: Australian Open, semifinals

Rankings: Kenin, No. 14 vs. Barty, No. 1

Score: 7-6 (6), 7-5

Before the the Australian Open this year, Sofia Kenin had never made it past the fourth round at any major. The American was looking strong during her run, but she did not face a seeded player until her semifinal meeting with Barty, the world No. 1, who was riding the momentum from winning in Adelaide.

Yet Kenin did not drop a set during the match, despite having a lower first-serve percentage. The 22-year-old took advantage of two break points to eventually seal the deal. Before this showdown, Barty was leading in their head-to-head career matchups, 4-1.

Kenin went on to defeat Garbine Muguruza in the final to win her first Grand Slam title.
