The world No. 21 was challenged by Ukrainian qualifier Anhelina Kalinina in Linz. Mertens dropped the first set before fighting back, and using just about every shot in her arsenal to defeat the talented 23-year-old, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Nadia Podoroska

After making some huge noise by reaching the semifinals at Roland Garros, the world No. 48 is looking to finish her year strong. The 23-year-old picked up a clean 6-4, 6-4 win over Irina-Camelia Begu to advance at the last WTA event of the season. Podoroska will battle Camila Giorgi for a spot in the Linz quarterfinals.

Salvatore Caruso

The Italian handed Sofia's No. 2 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime his third consecutive opening-round loss. Caruso kept as many balls as possible in play to force Auger-Aliassime to stay patient in the longer rallies. The world No. 82 ultimately earned the biggest win of his career by posting a 6-4, 6-4 win.

Jannik Sinner

The Italian teen picked up a 6-3, 6-4 victory against qualifier Marc-Andrea Huesler. Last year, Sinner claimed the Next Gen ATP Finals by dismissing Alex de Minaur in the event's final. The world No. 44's seamless second-round win sets up a re-match against the Aussie on Thursday in Sofia.

This year's US Open quarterfinalist was put to the test against qualifier Aslan Karatsev and was just one point away from having to go to a deciding set. However, the Sofia No. 3 seed managed to break Karatsev down from the baseline to take a 6-4, 7-6 (5) win.
