Top 5 Photos 9/27: Wawrinka wonderful in Paris opener

The action in France has begun and it's off to a roaring start. Two Grand Slam champions squared off in the first round, while Coco Gauff picked up her first Roland Garros main draw victory by upsetting last year's semifinalist Johanna Konta.

Stan Wawrinka

The last time Wawrinka and Andy Murray faced off on Court Philippe-Chatrier was back in 2017. Wawrinka captured that edition in much more thrilling fashion. Sunday's opener was significantly different from their previous five-set clash: the world No. 17 easily dismissed Murray, 6-1, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to Roland Garros' second round.

Coco Gauff

Despite hitting 12 double faults, the 16-year-old managed to capture her first main draw bout against Johanna Konta. The American knocked out the No. 9 seed, 6-3, 6-3, on Suzanne-Lenglen to score another big win. Gauff will face Italian qualifier Martina Trevisan who defeated Camila Giorgi in her opener.

Benoit Paire

After a rollercoaster of frustrations over the past month and testing positive for COVID-19 on multiple occasions, the Frenchman was given the green light to compete. He defeated South Korea's Kwon Soon-woo, 7-5, 6-4, 6-4, to continue his campaign on the terre battue.

Eugenie Bouchard

The Canadian reached the final in Turkey and although she didn't get the winner's trophy, she received a wild card into Roland Garros. The world No. 168 dismissed Anna Kalinskaya, 6-4, 6-4, and will battle Daria Gavrilova, who upset Dayana Yastremska and is using her protected ranking again missing over a year due to injury.

Roland Garros

With the tournament being pushed into September and October, the conditions are vastly different than playing in the warmth of June. Besides the cold and gloomy weather, the hours of daylight are also less, which has required the event to play underneath lights and the Court Philippe-Chatrier roof for the first time in Roland Garros history.
