In the year of our crisis 2020, Su-Wei Hsieh delivered the No. 1 empty-stadium response in her WTA Tour return in Rome.

Though she didn't play the abbreviated American hard-court season, predominantly Cincinnati-in-Queens and the US Open, Hsieh comported herself well in a 6-3, 6-1 first-round defeat in Italy to an in-form Elise Mertens, a quarterfinalist in New York.

Even so, Hsieh and partner Barbora Strycova, the No. 1 doubles seeds in Rome, won the title without dropping a set.
