Born in Moscow, Gavrilova received her Australian citizenship in 2015 and represented Australia at the Olympic Games in Rio. Fittingly, she had her Grand Slam breakthrough in Melbourne by reaching the fourth round in 2016, and finished that season with her first WTA Premier final appearance, in Moscow. In 2017, she won her biggest WTA title in New Haven and reached a career-high ranking of No. 20.

The 26-year-old explains why this year has been better for her than 2019, when injuries pushed her from starting at No. 34 to ending outside of the Top 200. In March, with her Achilles tendon fully rehabbed, the COVID-19 pandemic prevented her from playing her first scheduled tournament back. The renewed lockdown in Australia means travel requires approved authorization, and stars like Nick Kyrgios and Ashleigh Barty have already announced they will forgo the US Open.

Off the court, Gavrilova has stayed busy by taking WTA University courses, making TikToks and playing with her dog Tofu. She shares how Tofu got his name, how her training is going and when she's going to marry her fiancé Luke Saville.
