While the summer season is falling apart, World TeamTennis is holding onto hope, as is one of its leading stars Sam Querrey. No mater what happens next, the world No. 45 was lucky enough to be part of one of the last pro events of 2020 before the coronavirus shutdown.

He played the WTT Celebrity All-Star Match in San Diego on March 1, alongside the Bryan brothers, Monica Puig, Madison Keys, CoCo Vandeweghe, Ryan Harrison and Taylor Townsend. The event also featured an off-court appearance from a newly-retired Maria Sharapova.

"It was a ton of fun," Querrey said. "I've played WTT for my entire professional career. This is the first time they had an all-star event to get everyone excited about the actual WTT season that's going to be in July.

"Hopefully we have it."

As of Tuesday, the league stated that a decision about the 2020 season would be made by June 15. On Wednesday, Wimbledon announced its cancellation, which was scheduled for June 29-July 12. The ITF, ATP and WTA tours extended the suspension until July 13. The WTT season is set to begin on July 12.

Querrey has been extremely dedicated to WTT, prioritizing the league and domestic tournaments even over the Olympic Games. An Olympian in 2008, he skipped the following two Games and intended to miss Tokyo this year. So that shift to 2021 didn't impact him, but Wimbledon's cancellation did.

"I'm really bummed. I saw it coming. I think everyone saw it coming," he said. "We've got to get this virus under control."

Querrey has been a quarterfinalist twice at the All England Club, including last year, and reached the semifinals in 2017.

At least the 32-year-old has WTT to hang onto as the league heads for its 45th season, which would theoretically benefit from Olympic hopefuls now looking for somewhere to play. Querrey is meant to compete in the full season (through August 2) for the Las Vegas Rollers.

"It's a different environment than normal tennis tournaments," he said. "The rules are different. There's music in between every point. It's one of those evens where you can not even like tennis—you don't have to be a tennis fan—and you can go to WTT event and you're going to have a pretty good time."

While the rest of the 2020 tennis season, WTT included, is in question, at least one new pro match will be shown on TV for fans to enjoy: the WTT Celebrity All-Star Match. It will air on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. EST on CBS Sports.

"It was a fun event to be a part of," Querrey said. "Hopefully everyone that sees it—whether they were there live or they see it on CBS—something might click in their brain and say, 'Hey I need to go watch one of these events because they're pretty fun.'"
