After falling in four consecutive first round matches to start her 2020 season, the 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens captured her first win against Emma Navarro 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. In two hours 16 minutes, the No. 5 seed ended her drought in Monterrey.

In Lyon, Camila Giorgicame back from an early break down to defeat Vera Lapko, 6-3, 6-4, in Lyon. Giorgi has found success playing indoors on many occasions, with the most recent coming from Linz 2018. The Italian will next face No. 4 seed Alize Cornet.

Anna Karolina Schmiedlova made her way past two qualifying matches and slipped past Venus Williams, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, in Monterrey on Monday. The world No. 93 will attempt to reach the event's quarterfinal by upsetting the No. 9 seed Marie Bouzkova.

Kristina Mladenovic had a rollercoaster opening round in Lyon against countrywoman Chloe Paquet. The No. 2 seed slipped past wildcard Paquet, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4, to continue her run in front of her home crowd.

Caroline Garcia had a similar start to Mladenovic in Lyon. Garcia was pushed but in the end was able to find her winning form to post a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (5) score. The No. 3 seed will next face Ysaline Bonaventure for quarterfinal spot.
