The Arab city has been developing at a rapid rate, with new skyscrapers each year, and a recently opened underground subway system.

“It’s incredible," Barty said. "I think the infrastructure that’s changed around here, keeping with the old but making it new and renovating. It’s a beautiful city.”

Barty is the top seed at the WTA Premier 5 and opens against Laura Siegemund, while Pliskova is seeded third and will face Bernarda Pera. Pliskova last won the title in 2017.
