The Rio Open holds a special place in the tournament schedule because it is the only ATP 500 event in South America and the only ATP event in Brazil. It has a relatively short history, but its unique location offers an experience unlike any other tournament.

Last year, first-time title winner Laslo Dere took home the trophy. This year, the top half of the draw has been filled with upsets as No. 1 seed Dominic Thiem fell to qualifier Gianluca Mager, and he'll play lucky loser Attila Balazs.
