While everyone was focusing on Coco Gauff and Serena Williams, a different American  slipped through the shadows in Melbourne. Before anyone knew it, 21-year-old Sofia Kenin was the new champion.

She actually beat Gauff in the round of 16 before moving on to upset world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty and then two-time major champion Garbine Muguruza. Even after losing the first set, 4-6, Kenin refused to quit and won the next two 6-2, 6-2.

The title comes after Kenin was unable to reach the second week of a Grand Slam her whole career until arriving in Melbourne. She only losing two sets during her two weeks in Melbourne.

Kenin is now ranked No. 7 in the world, marking her first time in the Top 10.
