It hasn't been entirely smooth sailing this Australian Open for Roger Federer, who was brought to the brink of elimination in the third round, and who dropped his first set in Round 4.

But by the time he'd pulled off the win on Sunday, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, over an in-form Marton Fucsovics, Federer was all fun and games.

Upon being told by John McEnroe in his on-court interview that his quarterfinal opponent would be Tennys—American Tennys Sandgren—Federer said, in his goofiest dad voice, "He was not gonna be a baseball player, that's for sure," taking a second to laugh along with the crowd at his own joke.

He then decided to double down: "I've played a lot of tennis in my life, but never against Tennys."

"Ohhhh maannn," he groaned while smiling, looking around at what he'd done before McEnroe cut off the interview.

Tennys, it turns out, has been playing some quite good tennis in Melbourne this fortnight, ousting Marco Trungelliti, No. 8 seed Matteo Berrettini, Sam Querrey and, in a hard-fought four-setter on Sunday, No. 12 Fabio Fognini—all while ranked No. 100.

Sandgren finished that fourth-round Fognini upset with maybe one of the best points of the tournament: a 26-shot grind that Sandgren punctuated with an aggressive forehand approach and a feathery-soft sock-high drop volley to secure the quarterfinals spot.

He celebrated with a well-earned bow:

After the match, Sandgren, who faced criticism for his social-media history during his quarterfinal run in 2018, "liked" this tweet from journalist and tennis enthusiast Glenn Greenwald:

Regardless, Federer, in order to avoid another close brush with being sent home, will likely need to bring his best tennis against Tennys.
