Although probably not considered a heritage brand, Asics has been making tennis shoes since 1952. Over those years, as equipment as evolved to meet the needs of its players, the Gel-Resolution has emerged as the company’s most iconic franchise. Through each generation of the shoe, the theme of dependable support has been its hallmark. Developed with input from brand ambassador, Gael Monfils—a player who knows something about putting stress on shoes—the Gel-Resolution 8 looks to take the shoe’s reputation for superior stability to another level.
A new technology—Dynawall—has been added to both the medial and lateral sides of the shoe to provide greater support during motion. The lacing system features Dynawrap, a system of panels that actually uses the wearers own movement to enhance stability. There are two “straps”—one connects the lateral edge to the medial lace and vice versa.
One of the complaints Asics heard from consumers in regards to the Gel-Resolution 7 was it felt a little unyielding in spots, and lacked overall comfort. The new full-length Flexion Fit upper is designed to have greater multi-directional flexibility for a more forgiving ride, while still providing the necessary durability and protection.
The AHAR Plus outsole, with its six-month guarantee, also got retooled to enhance stability. The last piece of the updated puzzle is probably the first thing many consumers consider when buying a shoe: Asics wanted to improve the styling for a more attractive, attention-getting appearance. It’s still going to be rooted in performance, but the company felt players still wanted it to have a fresher, more vibrant aesthetic.
The GEL-Resolution 8 went on sale on December 1. It sells for $140 and comes in men’s, women’s and children's sizes, as well as select wide options. Both hard and clay outsoles are available for the adult shoes.
