Dominic Thiem has long had one of the most dynamic games in tennis, and heading into the 2020 season, he now has a hairstyle to match—with blond tips in the vein of an early 2000s singer, or a late-'90s Roger Federer.

But Austrian teammate Dennis Novak, on a Q&A drive in Sydney ahead of the new ATP Cup, took credit for setting the trend.

"Actually, I had it first, in the summer," Novak said. "I wanted it silver, but after a few weeks it went to blond."

Thiem, part of the ATP interview too, then noted that he sported a similar look in 2015, and explained his decision to go blond again in the offseason.

"I had one day off still in Miami, I went to the hairdresser and that's it," he said. "I really love the hairstyle now, even though many people around me don't."

Novak, when asked to share a funny story about his time with Thiem, recounted a minor car accident, in which he was driving and a slow crash broke Thiem's door, trapping Thiem in the car.

"It was not my fault," Novak laughed.

Austria plays its ATP Cup opener on Saturday, taking on a tough Croatia squad featuring Marin Cilic and Borna Coric. Debatably, Thiem and Novak have already won the battle for best hair.
