Amanda Anisimova

Age: 18

Ranking: No. 24

In a lot of ways, 2019 was the "season that almost was" for Amanda Anisimova.

Playing her first Australian Open, she racked up three wins, including straight sets over No. 11 Aryna Sabalenka, before falling in the fourth round to eventual finalist Petra Kvitova, 6-2, 6-1.

In April, Anisimova picked up her first WTA title, on the Bogota clay, though she didn't face anyone in the top 100. She carried that momentum into Roland Garros, where she beat Sabalenka (again), defending champion Simona Halep and three others to make the semifinals—still as a 17-year-old. This time, she'd lose in three sets to the soon-to-be champion, Ashleigh Barty.

Following the untimely death of her father, Anisimova played a light schedule to finish 2019, missing the US Open and WTA Elite Trophy.

In spite of it all, she truly put together a breakthrough year, rising from No. 96 to No. 24. The 2020 season should be her first of many, many chances to shine even brighter.
