While two Grand Slam champions and former world No. 1s Simona Halep and Serena Williams eventually battled it out for the title at this year’s Wimbledon, for a while there it appeared as if anyone remaining in the draw during the second week could be crowned the champion.

Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic did her best to stay in title contention.

Playing in her 53rd career Grand Slam tournament and unseeded at Wimbledon for the first time in five years, Strycova made her deepest run at a major by advancing to the semifinals. She defeated seeded players in three of her first four matches, then topped another—hometown hopeful Johanna Konta—in the quarterfinals.

Facing Williams for the fourth time in their careers, Strycova was unable to make much of a dent in the American’s game as she fell in straight sets.

While her singles run might have come to an end, the 33-year-old—one of the most versatile players on the WTA Tour—still had the doubles to contend with. And in that draw, partnered with Hsieh Su-Wei, she had the best tournament of her career.

The duo, which made a title-winning debut in Indian Wells last year, captured its fourth title of the season—without the loss of a set the entire fortnight. After they finished the season as the runners-up at the WTA Finals, Strycova clinched the year-end No. 1 ranking in doubles.

It’s unclear what she’ll do for an encore in 2020 as she’s indicated retirement is near. Whenever it does happen, surely Wimbledon 2019 will be among Strycova’s best on-court memories.
