Playing on home turf, Day 1 saw Ajla Tomljanovic get drubbed in her Aussie debut, 6-1, 6-1 , by Kristina Mladenovic. Ashleigh Barty responded by dismantling Caroline Garcia, 6-0, 6-0.

On Sunday, Mladenovic scored the biggest win of her career (though her second win over a world No. 1 this season) to upset Ashleigh Barty, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (1).

Then Tomljanovic redeemed herself with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Pauline Parmentier.

With everything on the line, Mladenovic teamed up with Garcia (all their bad blood seemingly washed away) to seal France's first Cup since 2003, and third in history, over Barty and Samantha Stosur, 6-4, 6-3.

The world took notice.
