Throughout the year, there were upsets that shocked fans and players alike, matches that made the world go "Wait...who won?!" Let's take a look back at the Top 10 biggest upsets of 2019.

Setting: US Open, second round

Rankings: No. 116 vs. No. 4

Head-to-Head: 0-3

Anyone who says that they predicted Townsend to defeat Halep in the second round of the US Open is lying.

Not even a month prior, the Romanian had beaten Serena Williams to win the Wimbledon title. She then made decent runs in Toronto and Cincinnati, making it seem like there was no way that she would lose to someone outside of the Top 100, especially a player she had beaten three times before.

This seemed even more evident after a dominating first set. Yet Townsend never gave up, and she rallied back, silencing the doubters by winning, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4). It is Halep's only loss to someone ranked outside of the Top 100 this year.

Townsend would eventually lose to eventual winner, Bianca Andreescu, in the round of 16, but you can only defeat so many superstars in one tournament. Big things could be coming for the American in 2020.
