Rankings: No. 7 vs. No. 10

Head-to-Head: 1-9

Judging by their rankings, this may not seem like a big upset. Serena had lost two Grand Slam finals in a row, and hasn't won a title since 2017. Halep was ranked higher coming into the match, but hadn't won a title in 2019.

Halep had also only beaten Serena once in 10 meetings, at the 2014 WTA Finals. While no one considered the Romanian an underdog, many fans assumed Serena would finally win Grand Slam No. 24. No one could have predicted Halep totally dominating.
