Maria Sharapova is in Paris, at a Givenchy fashion show. No, wait, she's in Italy.

The WTA star, currently ranked No. 137 as she nurses a shoulder injury, might be the tennis version of Carmen Sandiego. (Minus the crime capers.)

And in a potentially chance meeting, Sharapova and Marat Safin gave the tennis Twitterati something to talk about outside the lines.

The Russian stars met up in Dolceacqua, Italy, a commune near Genoa. They captured it for photo posterity—and at the same time, causing tennis fans all over the world to drop their jaws at the compatriot meet-up.

It's infrequently that Safin is found inside the lens of cameras these days in the tennis world, and his talent and flair are missed.

Safin, who will turn 40 in January 2020, is a former member of Russia's Duma. He retired from the ATP tour just short of a decade ago, in late 2009.

Between the two, they boast seven Grand Slam singles titles.
