Two matches into the Laver Cup, the competition was looking surprisingly close. Denis Shapovalov had taken Dominic Thiem to a match tiebreak, and Jack Sock had defeated Fabio Fognini even the overall score.

In the night session, however, Team Europe came roaring back ahead, with wins from Stefanos Tsitsipas and the Roger Federer–Alexander Zverev doubles tandem.

But the blue team did face some setbacks along the way, from Tsitsipas' shoelaces to a fallen Federer. Here are a few of the most memorable moments from Friday night:

Tsitsipas' shoe saga continues

There will be no need for a special shoe delivery from Leander Paes and Nick Kyrgios at the Laver Cup. Or, at least, Tsitsipas doesn't want one.

"I broke my shoelaces at 2-all, and I had to continue—I didn't want to stop the match," Tsitsipas said in his post-match interview. "As you can see, it's totally ripped off."

Tsitsipas defeated Taylor Fritz in a super tiebreak, 6-2, 1-6, 10-7.

GOAT down

Federer is known for his unflinching grace both on and off the court, but, every once in a while, something makes him seem just a little less Federer-esque, such as when this Shapovalov forehand sent the man twisted and tumbling onto the iconic black court:

The embarrassment wouldn't last, though, as Federer and Zverev would go on to win in straight sets, handing Sock just his second Laver Cup doubles loss in seven matches.

There are surely plenty more highs and lows to come on Day 2, when every match is worth twice as many points. In the opener, John Isner overcame Zverev, 6-7 (2), 6-4, 10-1, to make total tally 3-3 heading into the hotly anticipated Federer-Kyrgios singles match.
