NEW YORK—The voters got it absolutely right this time when they picked Bianca Andreescu and Daniil Medvedev as the 2019 US Open Series Breakout Performers.
Beginning last year, the US Open Series recognized one man and one woman in the early stages of their career for “Breakout Performance.” Aryna Sabalenka and Stefanos Tsitsipas won the inaugural awards lats year.
Both Andreescu and Medvedev have had incredible seasons, unforgettable summers and both competed in the US Open final. Andreescu came back from a shoulder injury to win the Rogers Cup in Toronto, and hasn't lost a completed match since early March.
The 19-year-old came into the US Open ranked No. 15, and cracks the Top 5 after reaching the final with victories over seeded players Caroline Wozniacki, Elise Mertens and Belinda Bencic. She's then beat Serena Williams on Saturday to become the first Canadian to ever win a Grand Slam final.
Remarkably, last year, she lost in the first round of qualifying in New York.
Medvedev reached the final in Washington and Montreal before winning his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati with wins over Novak Djokovic and David Goffin. He's risen to career-high ranking of No. 4.
I know it’s been a couple of crazy matches...but in all seriousness, I ❤ you guys! I love playing here and really look forward to the semi-final????@usopen // Я знаю .... эти несколько дней получились сумасшедшими, но если серьёзно, то я вас ❤️ мне нравится играть на @usopen, с нетерпением жду полуфинала
The 23-year-old took out former US Open champion Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinals to reach his first Grand Slam semifinal, then eased past Grigor Dimitrov. He would push Rafael Nadal to five sets on Sunda—the first player to do so this fortnight.
