A lot of hype went into their quarterfinal showdown as it was their first meeting since the 2018 US Open final. In 2018, Osaka won both her meetings against the 23-time Grand Slam champion, in New York and Miami.

But Serena came to play with purpose, and dictated the match, with an ace on match point to boot. Osaka has lots of things to be happy about like the fact that she's returning to world No. 1.

Osaka was having fun before her rematch with Serena, having scored a win over fast-rising Iga Swiatek in the round of 16 and benefiting from a second-set retirement in her first round.

Osaka next plays at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati where she's the No. 2 seed and has a bye.
