Reigning Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic started his title defense on Monday against world No.57 Philipp Kohlschreiber. The German put Djokovic to the test and forced the 15-time Grand Slam champion to come up with big shots.

At 2-1 in the first set, the German was pulled wide by a down-the-line backhand, but he answered back with a sharp forehand crosscourt. Djokovic went for a crosscourt forehand at an even sharper angle, but still Kohlschreiber was able to run the ball down and hit another shot. Djokovic was recovering to the middle of the court, but he was able to quickly change directions, reach the ball, and hit an unexpected forehand slice winner.

Although the world No. 1 was shaky at times, he turned up his level to win, 6-3, 7-5, 6-3. The Serbian will face Denis Kudla in the second round.
