Gael Monfils made a quick switch from clay to hard, and got off to an emphatic start. The Frenchman hit a leaping winner at the net against Steve Johnson on Tuesday in Stuttgart. He won a dramatic first match on grass, 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (8).

The world No. 16 reached the fourth round at Roland Garros, falling to eventual finalist Dominic Thiem.

Monfils opted not to take a break after Paris, perhaps to keep his mind off what is a rumored breakup with Elina Svitolina. The only real evidence is that their joint Instagram, @G.E.M.S.Life, no longer exists. Or maybe he's just doing his best to gear up for Wimbledon.

Monfils, the No. 5 seed at the ATP 250 event, will face Denis Kudla next.
