A dramatic, tense match deserved a dramatic, tense finale. Stan Wawrinka's second match point saw him lace a down-the-line backhand slice passing shot past Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The 20-year-old Greek circled the mark, implying he thought it was out, but the umpire ruled it in and the match was over. Wawrinka won 7-6 (6), 5-7, 7-4, 3-6, 8-6 in 5 hours and 9 minutes. It was their first career meeting.

The Swiss moves into the quarterfinals for the fifth time in his career, and first time since reaching the final in 2017. Awaiting him on Tuesday will be his pal and compatriot Roger Federer. When Wawrinka won Roland Garros in 2015, he beat Federer in the quarterfinals. That also happens to be the last time the 34-year-old beat the 20-time Grand Slam champion.
