The American men were never going to have an easy first week at Roland Garros. Between John Isner's absence, their lack of seeds beyond Frances Tiafoe and their difficult draws overall, it's not a total shock that there are none left in the draw as the first week comes to a close.

What is surprising, though, is that only one U.S. man—Taylor Fritz—made it to the second round. And even he, after beating Bernard Tomic, fell in straight sets in Round 2 to No. 18 seed Roberto Bautista Agut, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2.

The U.S. women, meanwhile, have claimed a full quarter of the spots in the round of 16:

Defending semifinalists Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys, seeded seventh and 14th, respectively, both advanced to the fourth round with close three-set wins—Keys over Anna Blinkova and Stephens over Polona Hercog.

And rising star Amanda Anisimova backed up her second consecutive win against No. 11 Aryna Sabalenka with a two-set third-round win, 7-6 (6), 6-4, versus Irina-Camelia Begu.

The story of the day, though, was Sonya Kenin, who defeated No. 10 seed and fellow American Serena Williams in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.

In the round of 16 tomorrow, Stephens, a finalist last year, is set to play 2016 Roland Garros champion Garbine Muguruza.

The day after, the Americans' matches will be: Keys vs. Katerina Siniakova (who beat No. 1 Naomi Osaka), Kenin vs. No. 8 Ashleigh Barty and Anisimova vs. qualifier and newcomer Aliona Bolsova.
