Fast-rising Sofia Kenin has been on the cusp of a big breakthrough for a little while now, but no one could have called this upset. The 20-year-old American ousted Serena Williams, 6-2, 7-5. Serena may not have had her best day but Kenin took it to her, hitting 17 winners and going for it instead of waiting for Serena to miss. Kenin showed maturity beyond her years, and looked every bit like she belonged on Philippe Chatrier.

When Naomi Osaka dropped the first set for the third time in as many matches, it didn’t seem crazy to imagine she’d turn the match around. Instead Katerina Siniakova ran away with the upset 6-4, 6-2. “I think this tournament I have had a feeling that was different to the other Grand Slams,” Osaka said. “Or every other Grand Slam that I have played, because usually I find it very freeing and fun, and this time around I was kind of tense the entire time.”

Another surprise hit the men’s doubles draw with Mike and Bob Bryan losing to Horia Tecau and Jean-Julien Roger. Of course, Tecau and Roger are Grand Slam champions and formidable opponents but seeing the Bryans lose early is always a shock. Tecau and Roger just won Madrid together.
