Following in his former doubles partner's footsteps, Pierre-Hugues Herbert pulled off a thrilling five-set win. He took out No. 12-seed Danil Medvedev a day after a world No. 235-ranked Nicolas Mahut outlasted No. 16-seeded Marco Cecchinato. Herbert and Mahut are the doubles defending champions, but Herbert is focusing only on singles.

Denis Shapovalov entered Roland Garros full of hope as the No. 20 seed, but was ousted in straight sets by Jan-Lennard Struff in his first match. "It's just not clicking," the Canadian teenager said. "I don't think that it's anything specific. I think I'm putting in the work. I think my game is there, but it just hasn't been clicking in the matches."
