Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari have put Greek tennis on the map over the past year, and they're experiencing continued joint success this month, with both recently reaching the Rome semifinals.

Tsitsipas, coming off his title in Estoril and his run to the final in Madrid, had a bye in Rome before beating 17-year-old wild card Jannik Sinner (who'd defeated Steve Johnson the round before) and Monte Carlo Masters champion Fabio Fognini.

He was supposed to face Roger Federer for the third time this year, in the quarterfinals, but Federer withdrew with a leg injury. This gives Tsitsipas a walkover to a semifinal versus Rafael Nadal, over whom he registered a three-set victory in Madrid last week.

Tsitsipas would lose to the eventual champion in straight sets but remarkably end up the only player in the Rome draw to not get bageled by the Spaniard.

Sakkari, meanwhile, came through qualifying as the top seed before getting past Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Anett Kontaveit, No. 2 seed Petra Kvitova, who retired with a calf injury and Kristina Mladenovic.

She would lose to Karolina Pliskova, also the eventual champion, in the semifinals.

The Greek duo are also quite supportive of one another on tour: They represented Greece in the 2019 Hopman Cup together, they plan to play mixed doubles at the Tokyo Olympics next year, they send messages in all forms and they even played some soccer together in Rome recently. (Tsitsipas tells the ATP he's a fan of Olympiakos F.C. in Athens.)

Sakkari was voted the WTA's April Breakthrough of the Month for her maiden title in Rabat, where she defeated Johanna Konta in the final. Tsitsipas won the title in Estoril that same week, marking the first time in history that two Greeks won ATP and WTA titles in the same week.

Tsitsipas is up to a career-high ranking of No. 6, while Sakkari sits at No. 39. The Greeks, it's safe to say, are in a good spot right now.
