Kiki Bertens wasn't going to let the Madrid Open title slip by her again. Last year, the 27-year-old lost in the Madrid final to Petra Kvitova but now Bertens is the one holding the title.
On Saturday, she defeated Simona Halep for the title in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
The Dutch player becomes to the first woman to win the Madrid Open without dropping a set. During her run, she defeated former Grand Slam champions Jelena Ostapenko, Sloane Stephens, Kvitova and Halep.
This is the biggest title of her career and propels her into the Top 5 for the first time. At No. 4, she is the highest-ranked Dutch woman ever. Her next challenge is the Italian Open in Rome where she is the No. 6 seed and will face Amanda Anisimova in the first round.
