Monica Puig's career so far has been a transformative one, not only for herself, but also for her native Puerto Rico.

In an "Inspired by Women" video for the WTA, Puig shared her the two most meaningful experiences to date, and both centered around the island.

The first story was of winning Puerto Rico's first-ever Olympic gold medal, in 2016—and how her fans received her when she returned home.

Puig's second memory came the year after, when she delivered food and water to Hurricane Maria victims with the #YoNoMeQuito Foundation.

"Those two experiences definitely flipped my world upside-down," Puig said. "They both gave me a vision to what I wanted to do in the future. One is become a super-successful tennis player, and the other one [is to become] a super-successful humanitarian."

Puig hasn't managed to return to the Top 50 yet in 2019, but she did recently make a Premier-level semifinal in Charleston, with wins over Aryna Sabalenka and Danielle Collins. Win or lose, though, she continues to inspire.
