The 18-year-old, who defeated three-time champion Angelique Kerber in the Indian Wells final to win the biggest tournament of her career, has been hailed as one of Canada’s rising stars. She became the first wildcard to capture a WTA Premier Mandatory trophy in history.

In Miami, Andreescu followed up her title with another win over Kerber in the third round. She had to retire against Anett Kontaveit with a right shoulder injury, ending her 10-match win streak. Her ranking has gone up to No. 23 after starting 2019 at No. 107.

The Canadian teen’s luck must have paid off for her country as the Toronto FC team went on to defeat New York City, 4-0.
