The BNP Paribas Open final will showcase two players who have never played each other or reached a Premier Mandatory final.

Bianca Andreescu is the first wildcard in history to reach the Indian Wells final. The Canadian has dropped just one set all tournament, defeating No. 32 seed Dominika Cibulkova, Stefanie Vogele, No. 18 seed Wang Qiang and No. 20 seed Garbine Mugurza—all in straight sets.

In the semifinal round, the 18-year-old scored her biggest win in the desert over world No. 6 Elina Svitolina, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

Though Angelique Kerber holds three Grand Slam titles, she is making her first ever appearance in a Premier Mandatory final and has dropped only two sets along the way. After coming back from 4-1 down in the third set to defeat Aryna Sabalenka. The German ousted both Venus Williams and Belinda Bencic in straight sets. Her semifinal win over Bencic snapped the Swiss’ 10-match win streak.

If Andreescu can sneak by Kerber and capture the title, she will become the fourth youngest BNP Paribas Open champion, and the youngest since Serena Williams lifted the trophy in 1999. Meanwhile, Kerber is vying for her 13th WTA title and the chance to overtake Petra Kvitova as the world No. 2.

Regardless of Sunday’s outcome, history will be made as a first-time Indian Wells champion will be crowned.
