Entering Tuesday night’s first-round doubles contest at the ATP 500 in Acapulco, Frances Tiafoe had only won eight matches in that discipline in his young career. His opponents, top seeds and two-time defending champions Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares, had won more than 800 matches between them.

Luckily, the American had his own 400-plus match winner on his side.

Robert Lindstedt and Tiafoe shocked Soares and Murray in straight sets in the first round of the hard-court tournament. Tiafoe, who dropped opening-round singles matches at the New York Open and Delray Beach Open—where he was the defending champion—netted a positive result with some extra on-court time.

Rarely playing doubles, he followed up his opening singles win in Acapulco with his first team victory since last summer in Washington. But he then lost his next match to a fast-rising Mackenzie McDonald.

Lindstedt is now into his third quarterfinal or better in as many weeks. The Swedish veteran is off to a good start in Acapulco as he looks to continue his streak of winning at least one title a year—this time matched up with his Washington Kastles of World Team Tennis partner.

The duo faces Marcel Granollers and Nikola Mektic next.
