Rocking a ruby-and-black Armani gown, Serena Williams had the audience seeing red, in the best way, at the 91st Academy Awards on Sunday.  That was the truth from the moment she arrived at the similarly red carpet:

Housed in the Dolby Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, the awards ceremony, commonly known as the Oscars, saw top honors doled out to Green Book, Roma, The Favourite, A Star Is Born and other films. It was A Star Is Born, Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut alongside co-lead Lady Gaga, that Williams introduced as one of eight movies up for recognition as Best Picture.

In saluting Lady Gaga’s character, Ali, and her journey through the film–a remake of decades of previous versions featuring Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand and other performers–Williams attested to the choices of career and love that many entertainers and sportspersons must make.

After the ceremony itself, which saw 24 awards handed out during a live telecast, 23-time major singles champ Williams and her quasi-rival on court, Maria Sharapova, both appeared at Vanity Fair’s annual after-hours bash.

Williams also narrated a new Nike TV spot that aired during the Oscars and dropped online ahead of that live event. Therein, she tells of women breaking down barriers and making decisions to carve out names and legacies for themselves.

From an expertly crafted 30-second advertisement with a cause to a cinema-loving star turn on the Oscars stage, Williams had a whirlwind of a weekend. She's next set to hit the court at Indian Wells in just over a week's time.
