Chris Evert is joining efforts to build the Carol Kimmelman Athletic and Academic Campus in Los Angeles.

"This is going to be a complex of tennis, sports and learning," Evert said. "It's just a wonderful thing because that's an area where there are underserved kids that will benefit greatly from this."

The facility is named after Carol Kimmelman, a lifelong tennis player and elementary school teacher who passed away from ovarian cancer in 2017. Kimmelman's husband Doug and their four children came up with the campus as a way to honor Carol's memory.

The new facility, located in Carson, will span 80 acres to become the largest public tennis venue on the west coast. It will have 52 tennis courts, eight soccer fields, a fitness center and an academic building.

Ever, who was recently appointed chair of the USTA Foundation’s board of directors, joins fellow living legend Tiger Woods in helping to head the project. The USTA, Woods' TGR Foundation and AEG are all contributors.

"[Woods] is involved in the TGR Foundation which is all about academics," Evert said. "We're going to have an after-school academic cutting edge building."

The campus groundbreaking is expected to take place in 2020.
