DOHA—Kiki Bertens is one of very few seeds left in the Doha draw, and they're not out because they lost. The Premier event has seen Caroline Wozniacki, Karolina Pliskova and Ashleigh Barty all follow Noami Osaka out of the tournament via withdrawals.

Wozniacki and Pliskova both stated viral illness as reasons—Bertens has been sick all week, too.

"I'm feeling a bit better, yeah, but still the energy is not 100 percent back," Bertens said. "I think every week there are surprises, and, yeah, unfortunately there are a few players sick this week. I had it also a little bit, but I'm just happy that I can still compete here."

The No. 5 seed is really trying to stay in Qatar as long as possible. On Tuesday, she somehow turned things around in her opener against Camila Giorgi after getting bageled in the first set. She would outlast the risk-taking Italian, 0-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4.

Then on Wednesday, the world No. 8 quickly dropped the first set again, this time to former Doha champion Carla Suarez Navarro. At least she snagged two games this time, before turning the match around, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.

"I was just hoping to just play some better tennis, to be honest," Bertens said. "It was like yesterday, same. Then today I tried really to go from the beginning, but it was not working out again. But then it helps that you came back yesterday from a set down."

Bertens takes on Elise Mertens in the quarterfinals, who ended up playing Pliskova's twin sister, Kristyna, who benefitted from a lucky loser spot and a bye.
