Simona Halep is embracing a formidable task this week for the Fed Cup quarterfinals. The world No.3 will lead Romania against a strong defending champion Czech Republic team.

Halep will be joined in her efforts by Mihaela Buzarnescu, Irina-Camelia Begu, Monica Niculescu and Ana Bodgan.

The 2018 French Open champion last played in the Fed Cup playoffs last April, where she helped Romania get an important 3-1 win over Switzerland.

The Czech team is notably missing Australian Open finalist Petra Kvitova, who testified in court on Tuesday against the man who injured her hand with a knife in a home robbery. Instead, Karolina Pliskova will compete alongside Katerina Siniakova, Barbora Krejcikova and Marketa Vondrousova.

Siniakova played a major role in clinching the 2018 Fed Cup crown last November.

She is ranked No. 1 in doubles and has also won multiple Slams with Krejcikova, who just won the mixed title in Melbourne with Rajeev Ram.

The tie will start on Saturday with singles on indoor hard courts in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
