Hot Shot: Vekic, Kvitova put on show in St. Petersburg

In St. Petersburg, Donna Vekic pulled off a straight-set upset over Australian Open finalist Petra Kvitova. Both women put on a hot-shot show during a contested 6-4, 6-1 win for the Croatian.

Vekic is into the semifinals of the Premier event where she faces former world No. 2 Vera Zvonareva. Ranked No. 97 and the only unseeded player in the draw, Zvonareva is still on the comeback trail after having a daughter in 2016.

Vekic has gotten off to a solid start in 2019, after also reaching the semifinals of Brisbane. The 22-year-old is currently ranked No. 30, just one spot shy of her career-high ranking. Her win over world No. 2-ranked Kvitova is the biggest victory of her career.

The other semifinal in St. Petersburg will see Aryna Sabalenka take on Kiki Bertens.
