Vera Zvonareva scored an upset over world No. 16 Julia Goerges in St. Petersburg, complete with an impressive hot shot early in the 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win.

With a ranking of No. 97, Zvonareva is solidifying herself back since the Top 100 for the first time since early 2013. The 34-year-old stepped away from the tour to have her daughter, Evelina, in 2016. The 12-time WTA titlist was ranked as high as No. 2 in 2010.

Zvonereva's seems to really thrive in front of a home crowd. In October, she reached the quarterfinals of the WTA Premier in Moscow, complete with a win over Karolina Pliskova.

Zvonareva is one of four remaining Russians in the St. Petersburg draw hoping to walk away a champion. She takes on compatriot Daria Kasatkina in the quarterfinals (Kasatkina benefited from a walkover from Maria Sharapova).
