You never never know who is going to start the new year off with the biggest bang. World No. 152 Andreescu entered the Auckland knowing that a tough field lied ahead, but several terrific performances saw her outclass the draw’s top players to reach her first career WTA final.

After defeating Timea Babos, the Canadian qualifier stunned tournament top seed Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 to seal the biggest win of her career.

Everyone would also have considered the 18-year-old as the underdog in her quarterfinal match against living legend Venus Williams. But once again, Andreescu pulled out an upset, this time by a 6-7 (1), 6-1, 6-3 scoreline.

She even won WTA’s Shot of the Day for her brilliant play.

Another stunning performance on Friday saw Andreescu concede just six games to sail past Su-Wei Hsieh and book her first career WTA final. Understandably, she ran out of gas against defending champion Julia Goerges, falling 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.

The teenage will rise to a career-high ranking of No. 107. Before Auckland, her best WTA performance was the quarterfinals of Washington in 2017. She played primarily on the ITF Pro Circuit in 2018, winning two $25,000 events.
