Karolina Pliskova made some local friends in Brisbane this week. She was even brave enough to hold a baby alligator, and a pretty huge snake.

The Czech posted a 7-5, 6-2 over qualifier Marie Bouzkova in the second round after edging Yulia Putinseva in her 2019 opener, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. On Friday, Pliskova won her quarterfinal match against Ajla Tomljanovic, also in three sets, and faces Donna Vekic in the semifinals.

Pliskova, the No. 5 seed, is the last seed remaining after Lesia Tsurenko knocked out No. 2 Naomi Osaka.
