Sharapova, Sabalenka ring in New Year in Shenzhen

Caroline Garcia, Jelena Ostapenko, Aryna Sabalenka and Maria Sharapova were just a few of the big names who attended a Shenzhen Open party to ring in the new year.

The event included performances and cooking by local artists and chefs, and a Q&A with the players.

On Friday, top seed Sabalenka will face off against Sharapova while Monica Niculescu takes on Wang Yafan. Sharapova was somewhat lucky to get this far after 17-year-old Wang Xiyu retired in their second set on Wednesday with cramps.

Sharapova had only supportive things to say to the Chinese teenager during and after the match (which ended at 6-7, 5-2).
